The Los Angeles Angels got blasted today by the Miami Marlins, 7-0, as Walbert Urena submitted a rare bad start that put the Angels in a deep hole.
Urena was facing Sandy Alcantara for the Marlins, which meant the Halos rookie needed to have his best stuff going.
Unfortunately, he didn’t. The Marlins broke the game open in the third on a pair of two-run base hits, the first one a double by Xavier Edwards, the second a single from Otto Lopez. That put Miami up 4-0 as Urena made an early exit after just 2-1/3 innings, with his final line of four hits, four runs and three walks to go with a pair of strikeouts.
It was one of Urena’s few bad starts, and it put the Angels in what became an impossible situation with Alcantara going for Miami. That hole got a lot deeper in the fifth inning as the Marlins broke the game open against reliever Brett Kerry with three more runs.
Edwards drove in the first run of the inning with a single, and Griffin Conine did the same to get another run home. Heriberto Hernandez then doubled to bring home the third run of the inning, and that made it a blowout at 7-0.
Alcantara had a rocking chair outing as he dominated the Angels lineup, giving up just three hits and a walk to go with eight strikeouts in seven innings. The Angels didn’t have any luck against relievers Cade Gibson or Paul Fairbanks, although they did get a hit and a walk in the last two innings.
Kerry wound up going the rest of the way for the Halos, with his finaly line including three runs, six hits and a walk to go with seven strikeouts. His outing was a welcome bullpen saver after Urena’s early exit, and Kerry looked more comfortable in the last relief as he actually struck out four hitters in a row.
The loss stopped the Angels' chance to start a winning streak at two games, and it also cost them a chance to escape from the AL West basement, as they went into this one tied with the Athletics. But the A’s won over the Boston Red Sox, so that possibility will have to wait.
The Angels still have a chance to get a series win, though, and they’ll send Grayson Rodriguez to the hill against Ryan Gusto to try and get it done in the finale tomorrow afternoon.
