There might yet be a reunion of sorts in store for the Boston Celtics should they manage to sign one of their reported free agent targets this 2026 NBA offseason. According to recent reporting from the Stein Line founder Marc Stein and Stein Line contributor Jake Fischer, "Anfernee Simons ... is expected to draw external interest from teams such as (the) Golden State (Warriors) and Boston."
As the Celtics front office has been working to resolve the situation around Jaylen Brown in the wake of the Giannis Antetokounmpo debacle, Boston President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens has not, evidently, been neglecting other aspects of the Celtics' offseason team building plans, having evidently made good on his suggestion that Boston would be looking for speedy guards and big men in his most recent press availability.
Whether Simons remains open to a return to the team that dealt him to the Chicago Bulls in the cap-saving swap that brought Montenegrin big man Nikola Vucevic to Boston remains to be seen, especially with the Dubs potentially offering a major role if likely not a major contract.
But then, even if Simons did return to the Celtics, there is a chance he'd have both as big a role and similar cap pressures making his next contract with either ball club likely capped at the full, $15 million midlevel expection and likely less than that.
A far cry from the considerable chunk of change the former Portland Trail Blazers guard was making on his last deal in a new NBA era that devalues offense-first guards.
