After being cut by the Los Angeles Rams, Cooper Kupp didn’t have to wait very long to land back on his feet. He quickly signed with the Seattle Seahawks and has now begun his journey back in the Pacific Northwest where he grew up.
Before leaving Los Angeles, Kupp went through one last workout with the guys. Puka Nacua and Jordan Whittington were both there training with Kupp for the last time at The Village, while Andrew Whitworth, Matthew Stafford and others stopped by to say their goodbyes.
It was an emotional session for everyone there and Whitworth talked a little bit about what it was like to see Kupp work out for the last time at the gym where they’ve all spent a lot of time. Stafford even showed up with a box of donuts to tease Kupp in the middle of his workout.
“Coop loves a good sweet treat, so Stafford comes walking in with a box of donuts just as a little rib shot at Cooper in the middle of his workout,” Whitworth said.
"Stafford and I hang out, watch the whole workout, have a chance to just kind of sit there, waiting, wanting to give him a hug. Cooper is litereally training and Anna and the kids are waiting – like, literally showing up in the car, they’re going to get in the car and go straight to the airport and they’re flying to Seattle. Like, it’s go time. We’re going up there to find a house, all that good stuff. You’re sitting there watching him work out. Obviously, a dude who’s really special to the organization. You can tell there’s some tears in some eyes in Puka and how much he’s meant to Puka just over these first couple of years, getting to be around him. But then also in Coop’s. There was a couple moments when I'm watching him, he paused after a bench set and just sat there for a second and you could tell he was just trying to keep it together.”
Whitworth said he and Stafford sitting there watching Kupp probably made it even more emotional given how close they are. He said the three of them and their wives spent every Tuesday morning during the 2021 season eating breakfast together at Soho Malibu in what they called the “Breakfast Club.”
“There’s a lot of shared memories so I think that rush of all those moments together hit a little bit and here was some hugs and some goodbyes,” Whitworth said. “It’s the reality of the business. The truth is the majority of players that play this game don’t get to choose when their time ends with an organization, even when their time ends in the NFL.”
Whitworth said Kupp is looking forward to his time in Seattle, but he’s also sad to be leaving Los Angeles and the Rams after eight years.
“Cooper is not excited in the sense of to have to leave. He’s excited about the new journey ahead of him, about what’s in front of him with the Seattle Seahawks, but he’s sad to leave a place that meant so much to him and a bunch of people that love him so much,” he said.
Kupp has meant a lot to the Rams organization and all of his former teammates, which Whitworth encapsulated when talking about his farewell last week. It's easy to see why this was such an emotional moment for all of them.
