Andre Agassi says Jakub Mensik should ‘bring the mom’ at French Open

Andre Agassi made his view clear on Jakub Mensik bringing in a mental coach during the final stages of his French Open run.

The comment gave extra focus to a support-team decision that became part of the wider conversation around Mensik’s biggest match of the tournament.

Mensik later saw his French Open run end against Alexander Zverev, which made the timing of Agassi’s remarks more notable.

Agassi said he was “not a big fan” of the move in a Slam semifinal and added that a player is “supposed to bring in your mom at that stage”.

Agassi’s point appeared to be about timing rather than a rejection of mental coaching itself. A Grand Slam semifinal is not a normal match, and any late change around a player can invite scrutiny.

That does not mean the mental coach decision caused anything that followed. It only explains why Agassi’s comment stood out during coverage of a match already loaded with pressure.

Mensik had already spoken during the tournament about the mental demand of Grand Slam tennis, so the subject was clearly relevant before Agassi addressed it.

Jakub Mensik’s run ends against Alexander Zverev​

Mensik eventually lost to Alexander Zverev in the French Open semifinals, with Zverev winning 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

The defeat still came at the end of a significant fortnight for Mensik, who was ranked No. 27 by the ATP before the semifinal stage.

Agassi’s remark did not define Mensik’s run. It did, however, ensure one support-team choice became part of the wider conversation around a young player learning how to handle the sharpest end of a Slam.
