The Los Angeles Rams could be in the market for a future franchise quarterback. With Matthew Stafford turning 37 and effectively one year-to-year contracts, L.A. may want to find his successor in 2025 rather than wait for when the team has a glaring need at the position.
Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox offered a possible trade-up scenario for the Rams to do just that in the 2025 NFL Draft. Knox suggested the Rams sent the Nos. 26, 90 and 201 to the Denver Broncos to move up six spots to the No. 20 pick. He then wrote that the Rams should take Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough.
This is a move that would come with mixed feelings from the NFL world. On one level, getting ahead of the potential quarterback issue is a pathway to long-term success. The Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers proved that over the past 10 years. However, the Rams are a win-now year with Stafford and should be looking at players who can contribute on either side of the ball immediately.
The Rams reportedly do have interest in Shough, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. He's an ideal build at 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds, but Shough is already 25 and played in 42 collegiate games for Louisville, Texas Tech and Oregon. Shough finished the 2024 season with a 62.7% completion rate, 3,195 passing yards and six interceptions.

"If the Rams believe that now is the time to find Stafford's heir, trading up in Round 1 would make sense—and might be necessary," Knox wrote. "The Steelers loom as a threat to take a quarterback at No. 21, and teams like the Browns and Giants could be looking to trade back into the first round.
"Trading up for a quarterback wouldn't fill an immediate need, but it could help ensure that L.A.'s playoff window doesn't close whenever Stafford decides to call it a career."
