Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham (8) celebrates a 3-pointer Tuesday, June 16, 2026, during the first half of a game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
The WNBA discourse has constantly revolved around the Indiana Fever since the franchise selected star point guard Caitlin Clark number one overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft. Shockingly, one of Clark’s teammates, guard Sophie Cunningham, has emerged as one of the league’s hot-button debate topics as well, despite not being a starter for Indiana.
Cunningham recently made shockwaves and headlines for making a surprise appearance as a UFC ring girl one night before playing the Las Vegas Aces, but that’s not the only reason she’s been in the current discussion. Some fans have dubbed her “MAGA Barbie” due to the belief that her politics lean left, and also have debated why she has a PE edition colorway with Adidas despite being a role player.
Now, Outkick’s Dan Dakich is giving his take on why Cunningham is so popular, and it’s a hot take indeed.
“She has a shoe because companies are in business to make money. And Sophie Cunningham is the face currently of the WNBA because she’s smarter than you. She’s smarter than all of you,” Dakich said.

“She understands what she looks like. And if that’s being white, blonde, and attractive, tough. That’s what she looks like. That’s what God gave her. She’s worked on her body.
“She’s a pro basketball player that understands modern social media. You idiots, you jealous little girls. She has a shoe because she is beautiful. Now you got hot. You got hot.
“You got sexy, you got likable, and you got women that are willing to do both. Be hot, sexy, and likable, and be a badass on the basketball court. That’s why she has a shoe, you dolts.”
A player who comes off of the bench being the “face of the WNBA” is about as hot a take as they come, especially considering Cunningham isn’t even the most popular player on her team, which has three all-stars, and she isn’t one of them. Still, since arriving in Indianapolis, Cunningham has embraced her role as Clark’s “enforcer,” and it’s a move that has certainly paid dividensds.
