The Kentucky Wildcats are just one win away from advancing to the Super Regionals after knocking off West Virginia by a final score of 11-9.
A big eighth-inning from the Bat Cats pushed the Wildcats ahead of the No. 16 Mountainers, as Nick Mingione’s squad didn’t back down, putting up three runs late into the ball game, ensuring that the Wildcats would be staying in the winners’ bracket.
A dinged-up Luke Lawrence, who fouled a ball off himself in the NCAA Tournament opener, played a crucial role in Saturday evening’s game against the Mountaineers, as the Illinois native filled the designated hitter role and came through in the late innings. He plated two runs with a bases-loaded single to break the tie over the Mounatineers.
Jack Bennett, the Wildcats’ go-to pitcher in relief, held down the Cats on the mound in the late innings, recording the win and getting the last 12 outs to secure it.
The Wildcats will await the winner of Wake Forest vs. West Virginia on Sunday at noon. Either team will have to earn multiple wins on the day if they want to stay alive for a Monday winner-take-all game. The Wildcats need just one win to advance to the Super’s for the third time in four years.
