One Detroit Lions star has conflicting feelings about his team's recent trade.
Appearing on an episode of the "St. Brown Podcast" released on Wednesday, March 4, Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown gave his thoughts on the Lions trading running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans on Monday.
"Selfishly, I'm sick because I love D-Mo," St. Brown said. "But I'm also really happy for D-Mo because I know how much he wanted to have a bigger role on an offense, and I think he's going to get that in Houston."
Rumors have swirled in recent weeks that Montgomery was upset about his decreasing workload in Detroit, something St. Brown confirmed.
"We all knew that he wanted more carries, wanted to play more," he said, while also adding that Montgomery "never made it about himself" around the team.
"He's a [starting running back] on 31 other teams ... I mean, he's damn near an RB1 for us, but you got two really good running backs, only one running back can play, which kind of sucks," St. Brown added.
The wideout's mixed feelings about the Montgomery trade reflect a lot of the emotions of Lions fans, who appreciated the running back's performance with the team but also understood the roster-building strategy behind the trade. It helps that the cap-strapped Lions netted $1.9 million in salary relief for two draft picks and a backup interior offensive lineman from the Texans, which arguably makes the trade an overall win for Detroit.
St. Brown acknowledged the trade should be a win for Montgomery, as well.
"I think he's going to a good team where he's going to be able to be the primary back, and I think he's going to make a lot of noise," St, Brown said. "I'm upset, but I'm happy for him. I love D-Mo."
