Cadillac F1 reserve driver Colton Herta is manning the wheel of an F1 car during an official session on Friday, taking over Sergio Perez’s No. 11 car.

Herta has been transitioning from American racing in IndyCar to international motorsport in F2 this season as he eyes an F1 seat in the future.

He has been close in the past, nearing a deal to become a Red Bull junior driver and hopping into the sister team. However, he has failed to get enough superlicense points, limiting his ability to actually race in an F1 car.

It seemed like his F1 dream was over after his failed Red Bull move, but the emergence of Cadillac on the grid, which is owned by the same group that owns his former race team in IndyCar, Andretti.

Herta was given a door into the sport to serve as a reserve driver, and as a result, he also got an F2 seat, and his diligent work has earned him a chance on the team.

Herta’s thoughts on getting the chance

“I’m excited for Barcelona,” Herta said on the FP1 outing. “I feel ready to get out there. I’ve had time in the simulator at Charlotte, learning the track and the procedures to follow during the session.

“I’ve also been working with the team at Silverstone and at the track over the past few races, following how they work so I can get up to speed as quickly as possible. The aim is to have a clean session and help the team gather the data it needs, as well as getting used to the F1 car.

“It’s going to be a busy weekend as I’m competing in F2 at the same time, but pressure is a privilege so I’m looking forward to it.”

However, sessions like Friday will be really important for his chances of getting the seat to go up.
