The American League MLB playoff picture is becoming an absolute mess—in the best possible way.
With the regular season entering its most important stretch, the race for the final AL Wild Card spot has turned into a seven-team battle that could realistically come down to the final days of the season. MLB insider Jon Morosi highlighted just how crowded the race has become, and the standings show just how little separates these teams.
As things stand, seven teams are separated by only 3.5 games, creating one of the most fascinating playoff races we’ve seen in years.

Perhaps the most fascinating part of this race is how many familiar postseason teams are currently fighting for their lives.
The Tigers, Guardians, Mariners, and Blue Jays all made the playoffs a season ago, yet none currently holds a Wild Card position.
The Blue Jays and Mariners are particularly interesting because they met in last year’s ALCS, with Toronto winning the seven-game series to advance to the World Series.
Now, just one year later, both teams are fighting simply to get back into the postseason.
That’s what makes this race so unpredictable. Seven teams are separated by just 3.5 games, and there is still plenty of baseball remaining.
At this point, there is no clear favorite to claim that final spot. One hot streak could change everything, and that means this race could remain completely chaotic all the way until the final days of the regular season.
