The Toronto Blue Jays have placed strarting pitcher Trey Yesavage on the injured list with left knee inflammation.
Yesavage, 23, left the Blue Jays' game against the Houston Astros on Tuesday, Aug. 4, after he felt discomfort in his knee while warming up for the bottom of the third inning. Toronto ended up losing the game 7-2 in Houston.
For the time being, the Blue Jays should be able to weather the loss of Yesavage in the rotation after acquiring starters Jose Soriano and Jameson Taillon before the MLB trade deadline. They had planned on using a six-man rotation after making those deals, but will now revert to the more traditional alignment.
Yesavage, a playoff hero in the Jays' run to the 2025 World Series, has made 18 starts so far in his first full major league season.
He sports a 5-5 record, 3.65 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 91 strikeouts in 93⅔ innings.
After making his major league debut late last season, Yesavage was dominant in the postseason, capping a magical run by striking out 12 in seven innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the World Series and putting Toronto within one win of a championship.
However, Toronto's bid to repeat as AL pennant winners has fallen short of expectations this season as the team sits several games under .500 and, at the start of play on Wednesday, four games out of the final AL wild-card spot.
While the Jays did make some additions at the trade deadline, they dealt away ace pitcher Kevin Gausman and starting center fielder Daulton Varsho, seemingly indicating they're focusing on building for 2027 as the final two months of this season wind down.
