Am I The Only One Who Doesn't Like Signing Emmitt???

Am I the only one that was hoping this deal would fall through...? Start buyin tissue boxes in bulk - If Emmitt doesn't get the starting job, I have a bad feeling this will turn out like Dallas... Shipp has already proved himself worthy, and his potential is unlimited... Once Emmitt arrives and (assuming) he gets the starting job, it will stunt Shipp's growth....

So why sign Smith -regardless if it draws a crowd... This money should have been saved to sign a WR now that Boston is gone...

i hardly think shipp's potential is "unlimited" but it's certainly more than emmitt's at this stage in their careers. i think the signing is a poor one and another attempt at a pr move that's ultimately gonna backfire in the cards' faces. but i can't help some nagging feeling that i just can't place that emmitt may somehow help the franchise, that said i still wouldn't have signed him, i'm still so confused . . .

You are not alone.

However, for less dollars (not much more than the NFL minimum), I think he would have been a good addition.

But, if it is true that they only gave him a couple million in signing bonus dollars, if he fails to produce, cutting him will not be that costly.

I agree, we overpaid too much and did little to improve out teams actual talent.

I liked the idea of starting Shipp and either TJ or one of the young RBs as backups (Anderson?).

Signing Smith just gives the Cards extra depth, but no real improvement.

Also, I'm still not sold on our "Great OL". Who's the center? Can Clemment return to form?

Also, If the average ticket is $40 and the Cards got all the money (they actually give half to the visiting team), the Cards would need to sell and extra 12,500 season tickets to cover emmitts $4M salary. The Cards do not get any extra for merchandising or other stuff. That's shared with the other teams in the NFL.

I do not like the signing myself. We overpaid at a position that I wouldn't consider an area of need.

I just don't think he will make much of a difference, if we were a 6 or 7 win team before we signed him we are a 6 - 7 win team after we signed him. I am not for signing a player to sell tickets or merchandise and thats really what this deal boils down to.

As for Shipp going down with a knee injury, what about WR, Center, DE, DT or even frigging kicker(which is a bigger need than RB)? We've got guys starting at those positions who would only start on other teams if their starter suffered a knee injury.

We can't afford to sign for depth when we need starters at so many other areas.

What I do hope is that Smith provides some veteran leadership and winning attitude. I would think the Cards would have discussed the actual situation with Shipp and Smith.

You fans need to look at this offseason in a different perspective. The Cardinals are doing the right thing even though it appears they are only running in place by signing guys at positions where they already had or have "star" players.

The team had to make a change in its leadership. They had won only 15 games in 3 seasons with those "stars" The stadium was only 1/3 full and most of the people in their home town didn't even know the team existed.

The team was so bad that they had to "reshape" not rebuild, and for once the brass figured it out. They needed a darn sight more than just a pass rush. They needed an attitude adjustment.

Now we have a "winner in town" who is not a psycho. They get all the positives that they got with hiring Buddy Ryan with a class guy instead of a nepotistic nut.

A respected veteran with 3 superbowl rings and a vet with a newly minted one, added to one of the NFL's youngest teams and most charismatic coaches, will replace the losing attitude with a new one...winning.

Smith is the consumate pro. I personally do not like him but I do respect him as a player. He is the first one in the training room, first one at film sessions, always practices hard, and is a silent leader. This is something that this team hasn't had in a long time.

I hate the Cowboys....and cannot stand Michael Irvin. However, Irvin says that Emmitt is the hardest working player he has ever seen (KDUS on Dale Hellastrae's show a few weeks back). Irvin himself was one of the hardest working guys in the league & for him to say that, I think it speaks accolades. Say what you want about IRvin's off the field antics, but when it came time to practice and play, he ALWAYS showed up....and when he did, Emmitt was already there.

Agreed. I don't think Smith brings very much as far as his contribution at running the ball. He will bring some much needed leadership, though.

And I think Shipp will become a better running back with Smith around to mentor him. Smith obviously knows the RB position better than any other player available and he will greatly help the younger guys learn (not just the RBs).

Granted..they overpaid. But at least they overpaid on a guy who has earned his paycheck over his entire career. And they will get some of the investment back from his marketability.

Smiths winning was a few years back, I think the Cowboys have had 3 consecutive 5-11 season, his winning attitude didn't inspire much in Dallas. I think you are overestimating his impact on the team.

As for him mentoring Shipp, just because you are a good player doesn't make you a good coach or mentor. His abilities in that area remain to be seen.

Its just not a smart move, he alone will not make this team a winner. The money could have been better spent elsewhere. At least it was just a 2 year deal, that much I will say.

I won't cheer against the man or anything but if he makes much a difference here in terms of Ws (the only true measure) I will be pleasantly surprised.

I think I'm pretty much done on this topic. I'll just wait to see how the season progresses and hope I am proven wrong.
