In the aftermath of the Golden Gophers’ 20-17 overtime win over New Mexico in the Rate Bowl, All-Big Ten defensive end Anthony Smith announced he will return to Minnesota next season for his final year of eligibility.

He was named the Defensive MVP of the Rate Bowl with six total tackles, four tackles for loss, and two sacks.

One of the best pass rushers in the Big Ten, Smith finished the regular season ranked second in the Big Ten in sacks with 10.5 to go along with 32 total tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, and one pass break-up.

His return represents a huge boon for the Gophers’ defense next season.
