Alex Bowman’s future has finally gained some clarity.
The 33-year-old signed a one-year contract extension with Hendrick Motorsports, ending long-running speculation this season could be his last with NASCAR’s winningest team. However, he will be done with Hendrick after 2027.
Following next season, Bowman plans to retire from Cup Series competition. The organization did not announce who would succeed him in the No. 48 Chevrolet.
"I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what’s next, and this feels like the right decision at the right time," Bowman said in a statement. "The sport asks a lot of you, and I’ve learned it’s important to listen to your body and make the right choices for yourself. To say I’m incredibly grateful to Mr. Hendrick, our partners at Ally and Chevrolet, and everyone at Hendrick Motorsports would be an understatement. They believed in me and gave me the biggest opportunity of my life."
Bowman debuted at the Cup level with BK Racing in 2014. He spent one season with Tommy Baldwin Racing in 2015 before making spot starts across the Cup, O’Reilly and Truck Series in 2016 and 2017.
He joined Hendrick Motorsports full-time in 2018, following Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s retirement, and has been there since, giving its lineup consistency alongside mainstays Chase Elliott, William Byron and Kyle Larson. Bowman drove the No. 88 car his first three seasons and took over the 48 in 2021 after Jimmie Johnson’s retirement.
Bowman’s first victory came in 2019 at Chicagoland. For his career, he owns eight wins and 114 top-10s in 371 appearances.
But he has found Victory Lane just once since March 2022 (2024 Chicago Street Race) and has battled multiple injuries. He suffered a concussion that sidelined him for five races in 2022, fractured a vertebra and missed three weeks in 2023 and dealt with vertigo that caused him to sit out four events earlier this season.
He currently ranks 29th in the standings.
"My focus now is on making the most of my time on the racetrack and competing for wins," Bowman said. "We still have a lot to accomplish, and I want to close my career on a high note for our team and our fans. To have the chance to do that with this organization and these people is really special."
