The St. Louis Cardinals received immediate validation for retaining Alec Burleson at Monday’s trade deadline. Hours after remaining with the organization, the first baseman/outfielder delivered the first three-homer game of his career in a 13-7 victory over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
Burleson went 3-for-5 with six RBIs, providing a forceful reminder of why St. Louis kept a productive left-handed hitter who remains under team control through 2028.
He opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning, then added another two-run shot in the fourth to give the Cardinals a 6-0 lead. New York erased the deficit and moved ahead 7-6 in the seventh, but St. Louis responded with seven runs in the eighth.

The New York Post Sports’ Jon Heyman reacted to Burleson’s performance in a post on X, formerly Twitter, following the Cardinals’ six-run win over the Yankees.
“Cardinals made the right decision not to trade Alec Burleson even if he didn’t have 3 home runs tonight against the Yankees (and he does)”
Nathan Church restored the Cardinals’ lead with a three-run homer before Jimmy Crooks added a two-run shot. Burleson then completed his career night with a towering two-run blast into the second deck, extending the advantage to 13-7.
ClutchPoints also took to the platform, sharing Burleson’s third home run shortly after the blast reached the second deck and completed his career night.

St. Louis traded pitchers Dustin May and JoJo Romero to the Milwaukee Brewers before the deadline but retained Burleson despite reported interest from other clubs.
The victory improved the Cardinals to 56-57. More importantly, the 27-year-old slugger’s performance reinforced the value of keeping a controllable bat capable of anchoring the lineup as the organization balances its current roster with longer-term plans this season and beyond.
