For some reason Steve Earle never became mainstream. Maybe because he often wavered between country and rock. I enjoy it because my family listens to country and this is about the hardest country out there. Earle is one of the best songwriters of the last 20 years.

I was quite shocked that you posted this album since I had just listened to it a couple of days before you selected this.....I feel that you and I were practically separated at birth since we share so closely the same musical taste and discover/listen to the same bands at exactly the same time....

Anyways..... you definitely nailed it why Steve Earle never became mainstream because he did go back-n-forth between country and various forms of rock... If you ask him if he cared about not hitting mainstream, I'd bet he would answer that he honestly doesnt care since he's more concerned about the music and what sensational music it is....

This album was an auspicious debut and really set his career on the right track..
