JACKSONVILLE — The last round of honors for Alabama State football quarterback Andrew Body, came at Meehan Hall at Jacksonville State University on Sunday, June 14.
Body was named the Alabama Sports Writers Association's Small College Athlete of the Year at the annual summer meeting and awards banquet. It's another notch in the belt for the Hornet QB, in what was an eventful 2025 season for Body.
"It's a blessing. Just looking back over the long days, long nights, it all paid off," Body told the Montgomery Advertiser.
Body was the catalyst for Alabama State's first 10-win season in 21 years, earning him the title of SWAC Offensive Player of the Year. The awards didn't stop there for Body, instead, it shifted to the national level. Body was named the Stats Perform HBCU National Player of the Year, and the BOXTOROW National Offensive Player of the Year.
In a season that was cut short due to a shoulder injury, Body threw for 1,770 yards and 20 passing touchdowns in 2025. He led the SWAC in touchdown passes, and points responsible for (144), while finishing second in pass completion percentage (70.6).
Initially, Body entered the transfer portal December, but after turning down a few FBS offers, he decided to run it back in 2026 with Alabama State and coach Eddie Robinson Jr.
With Body back taking the snaps for the Hornets for the 2026 season, the expectations for an HBCU National Championship is high, and Body won't let Alabama State settle for anything less.
"These awards have been great, I am truly blessed, I don't take any of it for granted. But in the grand scheme of things, we want that title," Body said. "It's time to turn it up in 2026, and there's two awards that I feel like I left on the table."
Those two awards are the Walter Peyton Award which is given to best offensive player in FCS Football, and the Heisman Trophy, which is given to the best football player in Division I college football. It's a goal that some might think is too high for an HBCU QB too achieve, but Body believes that the 2026 season is one that will put Alabama State on the map.
"I need the world to know what's going on here at Alabama State and with Andrew Body, because the NFL is going to see this whether they like it or not," Body said.
