The Alabama Crimson Tide are heading into the SEC Tournament on a high note.
Alabama (23-8 overall, 13-5 conference) defeated Auburn, 96-84, Saturday night at Coleman Coliseum to close the regular season with nine wins in their last 10 games. The Crimson Tidelocked up the No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament to receive one of the four coveted double-byes.
In truth, Alabama's 12-point win over Auburn was a bit of a mirage because the game wasn't even that close. The Crimson Tide sped out to a 22-point lead in the first half and would go up by as many as 28 in the final 20 minutes.
Labaron Philon and Aden Holloway finished with 21 points apiece. Playing in what was likely his final game at Coleman Coliseum as the NBA Draft looms, Philon scored 16 points in the first half. Freshman Amari Allen had 16 points and five rebounds for the game, and Aiden Sherrell finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
The Crimson Tide never trailed against Auburn (16-15, 7-11).
Alabama, ranked No. 16 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 poll, still has some areas to improve on and clean up before it can make another deep NCAA Tournament run. Nate Oats' team reached the Elite Eight last year and made the program's first Final Four appearance in 2024.
But after a middling 4-4 start to league play that saw the Tide have to do a bit of soul-searching, Alabama is one of the hottest teams in the nation as Championship Week gets underway across college basketball's major conferences.
CBS Sports' latest bracketology has Alabama up one spot to a projected No. 3 seed. The outlet has the Crimson Tide facing North Dakota State from the Summit League in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Bison are 26-7 overall and 14-2 in conference play. They take on North Dakota (18-16, 10-6) in the Summit League's championship game at 8 p.m. CT Sunday.
In Sunday's bracketology update from longtime ESPN college basketball prognosticator Joe Lunardi, Alabama is a projected No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament after its blowout win over Auburn.
As things currently stand, Lunardi sees the Crimson Tide taking on projected Southland Conference champion Stephen F. Austin (27-4, 20-2) in the first round of the East Region in Tampa, Florida.
If Alabama wins its first-round game, Lunardi has the Crimson Tide squaring off against one of two teams they defeated in the regular season: projected No. 5 seed St. John's or No. 12 seed Yale.
Alabama will face the winner of Thursday's game between No. 7 seed Georgia (22-9, 10-8) and either No. 10 seed Texas (18-13, 9-9) or No. 15 seed Ole Miss (12-19, 4-14).
The Crimson Tide's first game at the SEC Tournament is 6 p.m. CT Friday at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network.
