Coming into this past weekend, the Alabama Crimson Tide had not won a three-game series against the Mississippi State Bulldogs since 2015, and well, that theme still remains.
Facing off in Tuscaloosa, Mississippi State came to Alabama and took two-of-three from the Crimson Tide this past weekend, including a victory in the rubber match Game 3 on Sunday afternoon inside of Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
Beginning on Friday night, Mississippi State took Game 1 by a final score of 13-3 in eight innings via run rule, a game in which the Crimson Tide kept it close before the Bulldogs pulled away with a seven-run fifth inning. A game where Alabama pitching struggled, the Crimson Tide were also out-hit a combined 17-11, but still received a big game from shortstop Justin Lebron who went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.
In Game 2 however, Alabama would eventually even the series with a 4-1 victory Saturday behind a strong pitching performance from the Crimson Tide, led by starter Riley Quick who allowed one run across 5.1 innings with six hits and seven strikeouts. Richie Bonomolo Jr. was also likely Alabama's top hitter, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.
With the series then tied a game apiece, Mississippi State topped Alabama on Sunday in Game 3 by a final score of 4-2, a game in which the Bulldogs pulled away late. Offensive production was a struggle for Alabama in the rubber match however, as the Crimson Tide compiled only two hits compared to five for Mississippi State.
As a result of this series loss, Alabama now enters this week sporting a 29-8 overall record for the season, as well as being 8-7 in SEC play. The Crimson Tide's next game will come Tuesday night at home against UAB, and will be followed by a road series at LSU this weekend.
