There’s growing optimism around Alabama Crimson Tide men's basketball that star freshman Amari Allen could ultimately return to Tuscaloosa for his sophomore season.

After spending the last few weeks going through the NBA Draft process and participating in the NBA Combine in Chicago, Allen’s draft stock appears to have shifted slightly following updated projections released Monday by Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor.

Allen entered the process viewed by many as a potential first-round selection, but O’Connor’s updated consensus big board now places the Alabama guard at No. 34 overall, projecting him as an early second-round pick to the Sacramento Kings.

That change could play a major role in Allen’s final decision.

During the Combine, Allen reportedly indicated he would likely need some level of first-round assurance from an NBA team to remain in the draft. If the league consensus is now leaning more toward the second round, returning to Alabama for another year starts to make a lot more sense.

One of the biggest talking points coming out of the Combine involved Allen’s measurements. NBA teams had viewed him as a bigger wing prospect, but after measuring shorter than expected, some questions emerged about how scouts project his long-term position at the next level.

Still, there’s no denying the talent.

Allen showed throughout his freshman season why he’s considered one of the most gifted young players in college basketball. His athleticism, ability to create offense, and versatility made him one of the most important pieces on Nate Oats’ roster.

And if he does return, Alabama could hand him an even bigger role next season.

Oats has reportedly pitched Allen on taking on more on-ball responsibilities, and there’s a real possibility he could step into a primary guard role for the Crimson Tide in 2026-27.

Another year developing in Alabama’s system could not only help Allen improve his draft stock, but also allow him to become one of the top guards in the country.

That’s why Alabama fans are watching this process so closely.

A return from Allen would be massive for the Crimson Tide’s outlook next season.

Alabama already has strong pieces in place, and bringing back a player with Allen’s upside would immediately raise expectations heading into the year.

Of course, there’s still time left before a final decision is made.

Allen has until May 27th to officially withdraw from the NBA Draft and return to college basketball.

He recently participated in his agency’s Pro Day and could still go through additional workouts with NBA teams over the next several days before making his choice.

For now, though, the latest projections seem to be giving Alabama fans more reason to believe there’s a legitimate path for Allen to be back in crimson next season.

And if that happens, it could end up being one of the biggest offseason wins for Nate Oats and Alabama basketball.

Roll Tide.
