A former Alabama baseball pitcher and fan favorite appears set to return to the major leagues.
According to multiple outlets Saturday, former Crimson Tide pitcher Spencer Turnbull is signing with the Toronto Blue Jays, a year after posting one of his best seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Turnbull was 3-0 with a 2.65 ERA in 17 appearances with Philadelphia last season while making seven starts. In 54 1/3 innings, the right-hander struck out 58 batters and walked 20 (2.9 strikeout-to-walk ratio). He last pitched in a big league game on June 26 before a lat strain ended his season.
The Blue Jays will be Turnbull's third MLB team after he was selected in the second round of the 2014 draft by the Detroit Tigers with the 63rd overall pick. In three seasons under former Crimson Tide coach Mitch Gaspard, Turnbull started 40 games from 2012-14 and had a 3.55 ERA and 157 strikeouts in 236 1/3 innings pitched.
Alabama made the NCAA Tournament in 2013 and 2014 but was eliminated both years in the Tallahassee regional. In his final season in Tuscaloosa, Turnbull was 5-7 with a 2.22 ERA in 15 starts spanning 93 1/3 innings. For his MLB career, he's 15-29 with a 4.26 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over six seasons.
Toronto entered play Saturday at 16-16 overall, three games back of the first place New York Yankees in the American League East.
