Fresh off an unprecedented three-peat as the Mid-American Conference Tournament champion, the University of Akron men’s basketball team learned March 15 it will face Texas Tech in March Madness.
During “Selection Sunday,” Akron received the news it's a No. 12 seed in the Midwest of the NCAA Tournament. Texas Tech was given a No. 5 seed by the NCAA Selection Committee.
The first-round game will be held in Tampa on Friday. The tipoff time and TV network have yet to be announced.
The Zips (29-5, 17-1) are in the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year. By defeating Toledo 79-76 on March 14 at Rocket Arena, Akron became the first MAC men’s team to three-peat as the conference’s tournament champ. The winner of the MAC tourney receives an automatic bid to March Madness.
As usual, Akron will be an underdog in the NCAA Tournament.

Akron is 0-7 in Division I NCAA Tournament games (1986, 2009, ’11, ’13, ’22, ’24 and ’25). The 1980-81 season was UA’s first as a Division I team.
Coach John Groce has led Akron to March Madness four times (2022 and 2024-26). The Zips also went to the NCAA Tournament three times with coach Keith Dambrot (2009, ’11 and ’13) and once with coach Bob Huggins (1986).
Akron has represented the MAC in all of its March Madness appearances except the one with Huggins. The Zips won the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament to reach the NCAA Tournament in 1986.
