A few months ago, there was an expectation that Aidan Miller, one of the top prospects in the Philadelphia Phillies farm system, was going to have a real chance to compete for a spot on the big league roster.
There wasn't an expectation that he was going to break camp, but there was a lot of hope that he was eventually going to be a guy the Phillies could rely on.
Miller has unfortunately faced significant adversity throughout the early stages of his career. That has been rather prevalent during spring training and the first few months of this year, as he's dealing with a rough back injury.
Miller, still a young kid, definitely wasn't expected to be dealing with such back problems at such a young age. While ultimately disappointing because the Phillies want to see what they have with the guy who they believe can really be a player for them one day, there was some promising news coming out of Philadelphia on Tuesday, as Miller is now in a better spot than he was just a few weeks ago.
“It's been a slow process ever since, and there remains no timetable for Miller’s return. His progress has been very slow, although everybody has indicated he is doing well. He had been taking ground balls and doing rotational exercises until recently stopping all baseball activities.
“It's unclear whether there was any type of setback or if the Phillies were simply slowing down Miller’s rehab work as they continue to take a highly conservative approach to his recovery. Either way, Miller seems to once again be trending in the right direction,” Paul Casella of MLB.com wrote.
Only 21 years old, the Phillies are definitely making the right decision by not speeding up this process. There's absolutely no reason to even attempt to make this a bigger problem than it has to be, and I'm glad the Phillies aren't trying to push him to do something that clearly he isn't ready to do.
It'll be interesting to see how that changes over the next few weeks, but I'm just glad to see that he might be back on the field rather soon.
