You guys can find whatever defensive "rankings" you want, but the only one that matters is the scoreboard... where we are the 24th worst the league for ppg at 24.1 per game... after being mediocre with the 14th best at 22.6 ppg... after being 13th best in 2015 @ 21.9.

Meanwhile, the two years previous to Bettcher we were 5th (@ 19 ppg) and 6th (20 ppg) in the league in defensive ppg.

If you don't see the obvious downward trend... every single year under Bettcher, I don't know what to tell you.

yep... being well ranked in yardage is just due to our offense and special teams giving opponents a short field to start with....we get outscored...

Good example is NE is 29th in yardage allowed, but is 6th in points allowed. They are 3rd in points allowed in the red zone and 9th in TDs allowed in the red zone. Despite their records Cincinnati and Chicago also rank high in these areas. If their offenses weren't so bad these teams would probably be in the playoff hunt.

I don't get why Bettcher gets so much grief either. Is he perfect, no, but he's the not retched mess people make him out to be.

Yet, people , for some unknown reason, want Mike Vrabel and his 25th ranked defense as a possible replacement for Arians. And for the scoreboard watchers, Vrabel's defensive ranking for scoring is....................DFL. Dead f'n last at 27.1 ppg.

Oddly enough, I'm thrilled we didn't post a good enough record to make the playoffs, It would just be another beatdown like the game vs Carolina a few years ago.... We just can't suck enough to get a top QB prospect..... AGAIN

Everyone should keep in mind that Points Allowed is not only an indication of how the Defense is playing, but the Offense, as well.

Lol you got to be kidding it's one thing for a defense to pick up slack but when your offense goes 11 quarters without a touchdown it's another thing and you know that

Bettcher is a curious case, second year in a row the defense starts the season out of sorts. Last year it seemed to be communication in the secondary, this year it was the ridiculous amount of zone, probably to cover how bad Bethel was and how tentative HB was playing. Also, nothing creative in play design for creating pressure, soft defense and lack of adaptation.

Swap out to T Williams, HB starts playing faster and the addition of Buddha...means we go back to man coverage, line stunts and some creativity starts to show on pressures, etc.

So if I blame him for our early failures, I have to credit him for the late success. That would suggest the bigger issue is player evaluation in the offseason and training camp. That sounds like a BASK problem instead of Bettcher.

I think Chandler Jones and Budda Baker were the main catalysts for turning the defense around. Some of the guys who were floundering took notice and have picked up the slack. Playmaking and tackling are often contagious...thus you always need bell cows to set the tempo.

the D has played better the second half of the season, but a season isn't about just 6 games. They've also played one of the easiest schedules I can remember in the second half.

That also has to do with losing CC, losing Golden and Swearinger you can't just lose guys like that and not replace them.

You have to give them a learning curve your not going to be able to go out and do the same stuff you did last year.
