Jets head coach and former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn found himself in the news Thursday for a very peculiar reason. He became the latest target of former Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers after the quarterback commented about him during his appearance Thursday on The Pat McAfee Show.
Rodgers was asked about his meeting this offseason with the Jets that ultimately led to the team deciding to go in another direction at quarterback -- the Jets signed former Bears and Steelers quarterback Justin Fields in free agency. Rodgers said he met with Glenn and new Jets general manager Darren Mougey and was asked if he wants to keep playing football. After Rodgers said he does want to play, Glenn told him the team is going in another direction.
"I figured that when I flew across country on my own dime that there was going to be a conversation," Rodgers said (H/T ESPN). "And the confusing thing to me -- and the strange thing -- was when I went out there, I meet with the coach, we start talking, he runs out of the room. I'm like, 'That's kind of strange.'
"Then he comes back with the GM and I'm like, 'All right.' So, we sit down in the office, and I think we're going to have this long conversation. I've flown across the country and, 20 seconds in, he goes ... 'So, do you want to play football?' And I was like, 'Yeah, I'm interested.' And he said, 'We're going in a different direction at quarterback.'"
Rodgers added: "I was kind of shocked. Now I'm not shocked because I didn't think that was a possibility. Listen, of course, if they want to move on, that's totally fine, but shocked because I just flew across country. You could have told me this on the phone if we weren't even going to have a conversation."
Rodgers also said he didn't feel there was an "ample amount of respect in that meeting". "I guess I shouldn't have been surprised based on some of the things I saw over the two years," he said.
Rodgers essentially felt like Glenn was going to see him as a distraction, telling McAfee he was told, "I don't want to be up in front of the room saying something and have guys looking back at you."
Rodgers responded with: "'What does that even mean? Are you assuming that I would be in the back of the room during a team meeting, undermining what you're saying?' I said, 'You don't know me.' And he said, 'You don't know me.' And then I said, 'Exactly, which is why I flew across the country to have a face-to-face meeting with you to talk about my experience with the Jets and to hear your vision for the team.'"
Glenn was already viewed as a coach that was going to the change the culture of whichever team he became head coach of. He is already making that mark. The Jets catered to Rodgers for two seasons. The Jets went 6-12 in games Rodgers started. The Jets cleaned house during the 2024 season, firing head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas. They went all-in on Rodgers and were sunk at the river.
Rodgers remains a free agent, mostly his own doing, as he takes time to contemplate his next move. He admitted he is focusing on his personal life and even said retirement could still be a possibility. The Pittsburgh Steelers have been talking as if they feel confident Rodgers will eventually join them at some point. For now, Rodgers is still weighing all his options.
For Glenn, he is creating a fresh start for the Jets, the team he was drafted by in the first round in 1994. The culture is changing. Time will tell if the results start changing for the better soon, too.
