Aaron Boone reveals ridiculous reason why Ben Rice hasn’t replaced Austin Wells originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

It's almost malpractice that the New York Yankees continue to run Austin Wells out as the starting catcher when he's healthy and the team is whole, though the problem for New York right now is that there aren't many other options to pursue.

At the trade deadline, there's hope among Yankees fans that Wells will be replaced, though I want them to proceed with caution, given what we've seen in the past.

Unfortunately, there isn't a slew of catchers available for the Yankees to go after. On the flip side, there are many more first basemen who could be available to come in and make an impact.

By doing that, the Yankees could allow Ben Rice to be the full-time, or at least close to it, catcher. While that seems to be a great idea, skipper Aaron Boone recently shut that idea down, adding that he just doesn't have much trust in Rice to be the Yankees' starting catcher.

“I just have not been comfortable yet, and because he, he got slowed down again by the palm thing, as far as his physical catching, if it is to happen, it'll be a ways off,” Boone said of Rice catching, per the Post.

I don't disagree with Boone in the sense that there are definitely questions about Rice being a catcher long-term in the organization. The last thing the Yankees want to do is mess up what he's doing offensively, and catching nine innings every other day, or every day even, might cause him to slow down on that side of the baseball.
