WINDBER, Pa. – After weathering an early burst from the Columbus Turn2 Blue Jays, Maryland State Crabfest punched out 11 runs between the fourth and seventh innings to produce an 11-6 win Monday at Windber Sports Complex in the Pool B opener for both teams in the 81st All American Amateur Baseball Association Tournament.
Maryland State nibbled out a run in the fourth and four in the fifth to draw even with Columbus. After the Blue Jays tacked on a run in the sixth, the Crabfest surged ahead with four in the bottom half of the frame and two more for insurance in the seventh.
Michael Copenspire swatted a home run for Maryland State, which scored its 11 runs on seven hits. Columbus pitchers issued seven walks to aid the Crabfest’s cause. Harry Middlebrooks had three RBIs, while Michael Baez, Tyler Smith and Copenspire each scored two runs.
Seven different Maryland State players had one hit. Middlebrooks doubled and Baez tripled.
Evan Rygalski’s two hits and two RBIs led Columbus. Rygalski and Chase Clemons each doubled in the loss.
Maryland State takes on New Brunswick at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Forest Hills, while Columbus takes the field against New Orleans at 12:30 p.m. at Windber Sports Complex.
