If you are a basketball fan, you already know what Victor Wembanyama delivered on Monday. He powered the San Antonio Spurs to a 122-115 double-overtime win over the host Oklahoma City Thunder in the opener of the Western Conference finals.

Not many would have predicted this kind of rise from the Spurs just a few years ago, and so, the win even drew praise from well-known NFL names, including Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Even someone outside the NBA world like New York Giants right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor felt compelled to give Wembanyama credit after Monday night.

“So I don’t watch the NBA like that but decided to watch the Spurs OKC game. Aye this man Wembanyama tf am I watching!?” Eluemunor tweeted.

The Thunder had almost no answer for Wembanyama, who posted a magnificent double-double with 41 points and 24 rebounds. His presence disrupted the Thunder throughout the night, making it difficult for several players to perform at their usual level.

Game 2 is set for Wednesday in Oklahoma City, with the path to the NBA title now running through San Antonio. If the Spurs manage to win out at home for the remainder of the series, they will become NBA champions, and Wembanyama has a message for this.

“The message would be that we as a team are ready to go into any environment, in any place, against anybody,” Wembanyama said, via AP News. “And even though we’ve still got a lot to learn, our effort should be over anybody else’s. And tonight, we were relentless.”

Meanwhile, Thunder MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took responsibility for the defeat, saying he needed to play better. It remains to be seen how Gilgeous-Alexander and Oklahoma City respond to Wembanyama’s dominance in the next game.
