Welcome to the Morning Commute

Today we’re talking about the return of the Mizzou diamond sports. And for one team, it was record-breaking!

Let’s start with Larissa Anderson’s softball Tigers, whose uneven start to the year added an early statement win over No. 22/19 Duke:

The win could not have come at a better time for the Tigers, after a rough 3-7 start to the season against some top competition. Not only did the win mark Mizzou’s third ranked win of the season, it also came aginst Duke, a team that knocked the Tigers out of a WCWS bid just a few years ago.

The Tigers are finally headed home this week, which should help smooth over these early season hiccups.

As for the baseballin’ Kerrick Jacksons, they kicked the ever-loving snot out of Mount St. Mary’s to take home the rubber match of the weekend series. Their 34 runs in Sunday’s game is the most of any Tiger team since 1902:

A trio of home runs for MU led the offensive attack, graduate Jase Woita clubbed the first long ball of the season and later junior Sam Parker and sophomore Chris Patterson went back-to-back in the eighth inning. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Macon went 6-for-6 and drew a pair of walks to become the third Tiger to log six hits in a single game and was on base all eight times. Macon and Woita each drove in a team-leading eight RBI – one shy of the school-record nine, which had been done only twice.

Gonna say scoring 34 runs a game is a strategy Coach Jackson should take note of. I don’t have his experience, but I think I’m onto something here.

Yesterday at Rock M and Rock M+

Vanderbilt comes to Mizzou Arena on Wednesday for another Quad 1 opportunity and I have no idea how that game is going to go. That’s because Missouri isn’t a consistent enough basketball team to expect them to be good every night. They’re good enough at times to beat Vanderbilt by 10+ points on Wednesday, they’re also inconsistent enough to play a one possession game and have it come down to the final minute. It’s also possible they show up and shoot poorly and lost by more than 10 points.

Over on this side of the screen, I’ve officially moved into, “check the game periodically on my phone,” status, and let me tell you, my blood pressure readings have been much better.

The relationship between the Tigers and the Blue Devils has become quite the rivalry over the past few years and Mizzou’s been on the favorable end recently. After Duke eliminated Mizzou from Women’s College World Series contention in Columbia in 2024, the Tigers and Blue Devils have matched up in each of the last two seasons, with Mizzou winning both.

Question: what do you think the chances are that some random Duke student offered a sacrifice to god saying they would give up the result of this game to beat North Carolina on March 7.
