The Detroit Tigers may have avoided a worst-case scenario with All-Star catcher Dillon Dingler.
Dingler exited Wednesday night’s game against the Oakland Athletics after taking a 95 mph sinker off his right throwing hand in the top of the second inning. The frightening moment immediately brought concern inside Comerica Park, especially considering the breakout season the 27-year-old has been putting together.
After being struck by the foul tip, Dingler remained behind home plate while manager A.J. Hinch and the Tigers’ training staff examined his hand. He attempted several warmup throws and finished the defensive half inning before Detroit elected to remove him from the game prior to his next plate appearance.
Television cameras later showed a noticeable imprint of the baseball’s seams on the top of Dingler’s hand near his thumb.
Following the game, Hinch delivered what appears to be encouraging news.
“Dillon Dingler’s initial X-rays were negative. He will go in tomorrow for further testing,” Hinch said.
While the negative X-rays are certainly a positive first step, the Tigers will wait for additional imaging before determining whether Dingler will miss any time.
The timing couldn’t be much worse for Detroit.
Dingler is in the midst of the best season of his young career and was recently selected to his first MLB All-Star Game, becoming the Tigers’ first catcher to earn the honor in 15 years.
Entering Wednesday, Dingler was batting .264 while leading Detroit with 19 home runs and 60 RBI, establishing himself as one of the premier two-way catchers in baseball.
For now, Tigers fans can breathe a small sigh of relief knowing the initial tests revealed no fracture. The organization’s attention now shifts to Thursday’s additional evaluation, which should provide a clearer picture of Dingler’s availability moving forward.
