The New England Patriots traded for A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles, and he spoke to the media on Tuesday.
The Patriots revealed on social media that Brown would be wearing No. 1 in New England. He has worn No. 11 for his entire NFL career and has not worn No. 1 since he was in college at the University of Mississippi. No. 11 is available on the Patriots, so Brown revealed why he is switching numbers.
"One, Julian Edelman," Brown said to reporters on Tuesday, per Alex Barth. "Obviously, he gave me his grace to wear 11, but I've got so much respect and so much love for him, I'm going to let that be & build my own legacy here."
Brown said he was going back to his roots by wearing his college number. When he was drafted by the Tennessee Titans, the number was retired in honor of Warren Moon. Moon actually came out and gave Cam Ward his blessing to wear the number for the Titans, but Brown did not have that option.
When Brown got to the Eagles, the number belonged to quarterback Jalen Hurts, so he stuck with No. 11. Brown clearly has great respect for Edelman. Tyquan Thornton, John Parker Romo and Joshua Dobbs have worn No. 11 since Edelman left, but Brown does not want to join that club.
