NEW YORK – The way things are trending, Jazz Chisholm Jr. will be someone else’s joy and heartache after this season, his free agent walk year.
He’s immensely talented.
He loves being a Yankee and he wants to be part of a pinstriped parade up the Canyon of Heroes, and to experience New York the way the Knicks did this spring.
The frustrating parts of the Chisholm Experience – getting tossed out of a close game, going through prolonged slumps, playing defense with a lollipop – can quickly fade with one swing.
Or two.
“He needed it. We all needed it,’’ teammate Jose Caballero said of Chisholm’s two home runs Monday, boosting the Yankees toward an 8-5 win against the Pirates.
“When he’s going good, he’s a game changer,’’ manager Aaron Boone said of his lefty-hitting second baseman. “He can beat you in a lot of different ways.’’
Chisholm helped beat the Dodgers in a huge 2-1 win Sunday night, with an eighth inning home run.
On Monday night, Chisholm homered in his first two at-bats against All-Star righty Braxton Ashcraft, driving in five runs and helping rescue the Yanks from a shaky Ryan Weathers start.
It’s the kind of thunder that – along with Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger and company – ought to keep the Yanks afloat while Aaron Judge heals from a rib fracture.
Only, it hasn’t worked out that way for a month.
Boone’s club is still trailing the AL East-leading Rays, and the Red Sox are on a 14-game heater, suddenly adding more drama to this division race, less than two weeks before the MLB trade deadline.
Chisholm’s game-changing ability has never been more essential to the pinstriped cause, a point that Judge and certain Yankee teammates seemed to communicate.
Confidence is “the biggest tool I’ve got,’’ said Chisholm, and that’s been waning at times this year.
Just 24 hours ago, Chisholm said that he’s stunk this season, with a below league average OPS.
“Sometimes they see me dragging a bit lately,’’ said Chisholm, crediting his teammates with a “don’t forget who you are, you’re the greatest in the world’’ pep talk.
As Chisholm put it, that’s mostly delivered in a subtle “come on, bro, don’t forget who you are’’ short conversation.
“I always think I have confidence, but I just feel like I didn’t fully believe myself at a point in time,’’ said Chisholm. “But at the end of the day, it is what it is. I am who I am.
“I do what I do.’’
What he’s done these last two games is steer the Yankees toward wins, while maybe absorbing a better perspective.
“Trying to hit a five-run home run with nobody on base, just things like that,’’ had crept into Chisholm’s mindset, during a largely unproductive first half.
But he wasn’t alone.
“Realizing that we can do this as a team and everybody just play their game’’ has been a lineup talking point, said Chisholm. “Because none of us is Aaron Judge, you know?’’
