Ahead of Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Angels, the A's announced that veteran right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. had been placed on the 15-day injured list with a right hip impingement, retroactive to June 18.
"We got some testing done [Friday] afternoon, which showed some inflammation in that hip area, so we made a determination to shut him down," A's manager Mark Kotsay said ahead of Saturday's game. "I think we're of the mindset that it will be only 15 days, but I hate giving timelines."
Before Thursday's game, Leiter was seen getting some work done to try and loosen up his hips in the A's clubhouse.
Leiter last pitched for the A's on Tuesday, June 16, firing a scoreless inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
After a tough start to the season where he held a 6.97 ERA in April, he made strides in May with a 4.63 ERA. In six June outings he'd allowed just one run across five innings, good for a 1.80 ERA.
In a corresponding move, the A's have selected righty Geoff Hartlieb from Triple-A Las Vegas. He was signed by the A's back in November and has posted a 3.48 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP in the minors. Kotsay said that the veteran has been in the discussion when they've needed an arm over the past couple of weeks.
Hartlieb made his MLB debut in 2019 with the Pirates, and has now pitched for six clubs and holds a 7.95 ERA over 82 2/3 career innings. The A's will be the seventh team that he has pitched for.
Zack Gelof was hit on the extended earflap of his helmet late in Friday night's walk-off win. He stayed in the game, and everyone seemed to believe he was fine in the post-game discussions.
Then he was held out of the lineup on Saturday, despite riding a 23-game hit streak. Kotsay said that Gelof came in on Saturday not feeling great, but that there was nothing that jumped out as cause for concern.
"Nothing that jumped out as signs of anything more than, I'd say, not feeling his best. So it was my decision to take him out of the lineup, give him a full day and make sure he feels good tomorrow."
Kotsay also mentioned that Gelof had been seen with the doctors, so there was no need to go through concussion protocols. "The signs weren't indicative of that."
MLB Pipeline has 20-year-old left-hander Wei-En Lin ranked as the A's No. 4 prospect, and after a tremendous start to the season in Double-A Midland where he held a 1.93 ERA across 10 starts, he earned his promotion to Triple-A.
The lefty made two appearances with the Aviators — neither of which went well — and he was placed on the 7-day IL on June 14.
Lin underwent an MRI earlier this week, and the specific results were not disclosed — but he is going for a second opinion. Any lengthy absence could impact how the A's end up attacking the trade deadline over the next six weeks.
