Zack Gelof is back on the A's roster after a quick stint on the IL. He landed there after Matt Chapman stepped on his hand last week in San Francisco, but as expected, he missed the minimum 10 days before being reinstated ahead of Saturday's game against the Miami Marlins.
With Tyler Soderstrom also out now, Gelof will be in left field and batting second on Saturday against a right-hander in Sandy Alcantara.
Since Soderstrom's injury, Colby Thomas has been getting most of the playing time in left, while the A's just so happened to face five left-handers in a row. He was also in the lineup against a righty on Friday, but now that Gelof is back, he can be deployed in left field — or really anywhere — when needed.
In addition to Gelof's arrival, the A's also called up backup catcher Brian Serven. He will be Jonah Heim's backup while Shea Langeliers is listed as day-to-day with a thumb contusion that saw him exit Friday's game in the fourth inning. We should know more about his injury status before Saturday's game.
Serven, 31, has not been in the majors since 2024 with the Toronto Blue Jays, when he played in 28 games and hit .159 with a .243 OBP. He has 101 big-league games under his belt, with the rest coming with the Colorado Rockies in 2022-23, and is a career .187 hitter with a .247 OBP and a 43 wRC+.
This season with Triple-A Las Vegas, he was batting .295 with a .392 OBP and a 115 wRC+.
While those numbers are fantastic, they were heavily aided by Las Vegas Ballpark, where he hit .389 with a .477 OBP and a 1.188 OPS in 90 at-bats. In 100 road at-bats, he batted .210 with a .317 OBP and a .637 OPS. Las Vegas is a launching pad as the A's experienced last month, and Serven has been taking advantage of that by padding his stats.
He'll likely be on the roster until Langeliers is ready to return.
To make room for Gelof and Serven, the A's optioned Darell Hernaiz and Joey Meneses back down to Triple-A.
The team also announced that Geoff Hartlieb, who had been designated for assignment on Friday, has cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Matt Krook, who was also designated for assignment, ended up being claimed by the Washington Nationals. The team has not assigned him yet, but he is on their 40-man roster.
According to his FanGraphs page, Krook has some terrific stuff this season, holding a 119 stuff+ rating in his 3 ⅔ innings of work. Unfortunately, his location+ grade was just 66 (100 is league average), which led to a 19% walk rate. Now he may get a chance to work with an A's left-handed legend in Sean Doolittle, who is the team's assistant pitching coach.
All of these roster moves in such a short period of time are indicative of a club just trying to tread water while they get healthy. The A's will continue looking for the right mix of guys as they continue chasing a postseason spot in the weak American League race.
