MITCHELL — Two area teams (the Volga Cormorants and Clark Traders) have each advanced to the quarterfinals in the 2026 South Dakota State Class B Amateur Baseball Tournament.
The 32-team, single-elimination tournament opened on Wednesday, Aug. 5, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 16, at Cadwell Park in Mitchell. The Class B championship is slated for 2 p.m.
Here's a recap of how area teams have fared in the tourney. Volga, Clark, Castlewood Ravens and Lake Norden Lakers are representing District 1B (Eastern Dakota League) and Redfield Dairy Queen and Groton Locke Electric are representing the Northern Plains League.

Other quarterfinal matchups include Parkston Mudcats vs. Dell Rapids PBR and Canova vs. Flandreau or Hartford-Humboldt Wood Ducks. ... One of the big highlights of the 94th state tourney came on Aug. 9 when Parkston Mudcats' pitchers Taite Klumb (six innings, eight strikeouts) and Landon Waddell (three innings, five innings) combined for the ninth no-hitter in the 94-year history of the tourney in a 5-0 win over the Kimball-White Lake Nationals ... The defending champion Parkston Rays were eliminated with a 2-1 loss to Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks on Aug. 8. Volga native Zack Puetz went 4-for-5 with a three-run double and a grand slam homer in Dell Rapids PBR's 16-0 first-round win over Colome on Aug. 6.
The Aberdeen Circus Sports Bar (12-6) is one of six teams still alive in the state Class A tournament after opening weekend play Aug. 7-9 in Yankton. The tourney concludes Aug. 14-16 in Mitchell.
Aberdeen beat the Black Hills A's 6-3 before losing to the Renner Monarchs 7-5. Aberdeen faces the Tea Steam at 1 p.m. on Aug. 14 in an elimination game.
Colton Cox had three hits and Chad Ellingson went the distance on the mound to lead Aberdeen past Black Hills. Kelly Coates, Kris Kwak and Cox each had two hits in the loss to Renner.
The defending champion Harrisburg Woodies and Renner each went 2-0 at Yankton and will meet at 1 p.m. on Aug. 14 for a berth in the state championship game at noon on Aug. 16. The Brookings Cubs and Sioux Falls Brewers, who each also went 1-1, meet at 3 p.m. on Aug. 14 in another elimination game.

- Volga Cormorants — Volga (16-7) defeated the Salem Cubs 9-7 in first-round play on Aug. 7 and also notched a 7-2 win over the Lennox Bandits on Aug. 10. Bayley Colemer drove in three runs with three hits and Dom Boerger, a pickup player from the Milbank Firechiefs, scattered two hits and struck out 12 batters in seven innings against Salem. Noah Puetz had three hits and Austin Buysse drove in two runs with two hits against Lennox. Trevor Olson fanned seven batters in seven innings and Jordan Sagedahl retired the final six batters. Volga will meet the Alexandria Angels in a quarterfinal game at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 13.

- Clark Traders — The Traders (8-8) scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally pasrt the Wessington Springs Owls on Aug. 7 and rolled past the Tabor Bluebirds 10-3 on Aug. 11. Zach Toben and Merrik Junker, a pickup player from the Milbank Firechiefs, each had two hits against Wessington Springs. Jakob Steen tallied three hits and Cooper Pommer, Toben and Junker two each against Tabor. Pommer and Steen are Clark-Willow Lake American Legion players. Hudson Fuller went eight innings on the mound for the win. Clark will face the Dell Rapids Mudcats in the quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 14.
- Redfield Dairy Queen — Redfield improved to 15-1 by beating the Burke Bombers 10-3 on Aug. 8 before falling to the Canova Gang 9-6 on Aug. 12. Peyton Osborn scattered eight hits over nine innings and his brother Bennett drove in four runs with a single and a homer in the win over Burke. The Osborns and Cooper Hainy each had three hits in the loss to Canova.
- Lake Norden Lakers — The Lakers' 11-8 season came to an end with a 6-3 loss to Wynot, NE in a first-round game on Aug. 6. Mick Tulson clubbed a two-run triple and Jesse VanOverbeke and Brady Steffen, a pickup player from the Elkton Snappers, each added two hits.
- Groton Locke Electric — Groton fell to the Lennox Bandits 2-1 in a first-round game on Aug. 7. Lennox scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the eighth inning. Brevin Fliehs, Jonah Schmidt and Watertown native Ben Althoff each had two hits for Groton (6-8).
- Castlewood Ravens — The Ravens (11-6), who reached the semifinals in the 2025 state tournament, lost to the Canova Gang 7-1 in a first-round game on Aug. 8. Tucker Wookey had two hits for the Ravens.

- SDBCA Legion All-Star Games — The S.D. Baseball Coaches Association's American Legion All-Star Games were held on Monday, Aug. 10 at Parkston. Team Black won the opener 6-5 over Team Red on a walk-off single by Clark-Willow Lake's Watson Grantham in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jehiel Aviles of the Aberdeen Smittys had three hits for Team Red. Cooper Pommer of Clark-Willow Lake went 4-for-4 in Game 2 to lead Team Red to an 11-9 win. Bret Milton of Volga added two hits for Team Red. Braden Danzeisen of Volga, Damian Severson of CWL and Kirby Olson of Big Stone City also played for Team Red. Broden Teske and Tate Steffensen of Volga, Bennett Eisenbeisz of Aberdeen and Braxton Brandriet of Big Stone City also played for Team Black.
POSTSEASON BASEBALL: Watertown Post 17 makes run, state amateur pairings set
- State B Junior Legion — Parkston defeated Volga 9-1 in the championship to win the State B Junior Legion tournament Aug. 7-9 in Redfield. Canton edged Sisseton 3-2 for third place and Dakota Valley slipped past Madison 7-6 in the consolation champion.
- State B Legion — Host Madison capped a 24-8 season and a 5-0 tournament by beating Dakota Valley 2-1 in the championship game of the tourney held July 31-Aug. 4.
