Good show tonight, i thought Chris Rock was funny, especially his barb back at Sean Penn...

Jamie Foxx takes home best acceptance speech I think, and I'm really glad Million Dollar Baby took home the big awards...it started looking like an Aviator sweep at first.

I saw the Aviator yesterday, and it just wasn't as good as MDB. Althought, I though Dicaprio was amazing, as was Blanchett.

Happiest win for me tonight was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind winning Original Screenplay...that was an amazing film and I think not as well known as it should be...

Mike

Agree with you on Jamie Foxx. Hillary Swank was good too. Fast talker, lots of people to thank, didn't let the music stop her from her "Clint" portion. AND her dress was amazing. WOW!

I wanna know if those are really Rock's bodyguards...Sheesh! Those guys were HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was pretty funny.

Hubby & I decided we gotta get to the theater more often.

Well, have to say that it was nice and short, but unfortunately, the ceremony (and the pre-show) were absolutely horrible. From the idiot reporters out front asking insulting questions, to Chris Rock's terrible screeching in the opening, and all the idiotic presenting in the audience to the nominees nervously standing up on stage, this was difficult to watch at times. A lot of mess-ups, at least Jeremy Irons adlib was decent, although there were enough crew workers running on the stage all night.

That said, the speeches weren't bad--Jamie Foxx, Hilary Swank, Sydney Lumet and Roger Mayer were the highlights.

In case anyone cares, the song from Phantom that Beyonce sang was originally sung by Minnie Driver (yes, that Minnie Driver), who has vehemently protested the fact that she couldn't sing it. I'm not sure the reason. She even put out an ad in the Hollywood Reporter about it, from what I understand. People that have seen the movie tell me that Beyonce was a horrible choice because she couldn't reach the low notes in the song. Take that as you will.

Absolutely right. Winslett was very very good in ESSM. I didn't see Million Dollar Baby, but Swank must have been great to beat Winslett.

i was extremely happy that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind won a best screen play award. what a great movie - i just wish they would have released it later in the year than at the beginning. oh well, guess that's just the way it goes.

Hilary Swank gives the worst acceptance speeches in Hollywood IMO. Jeez! She thanks everyone but her dog groomer. She thanked her lawyers for crying out loud! Come on! Nobody cares about that!

At least she didn't ramble on for 5 minutes reading from a sheet of paper like the last time she won, I guess.

I agree with Chap that giving out awards in the audience, having the nominees line up on stage etc. was lame. Some semblance of tradition should be kept in the show I think.

Agree about Beyonce too. Out of all the singers in the world they couldn't find a different singer for each song? Did Beyonce have to sing two? What was up with that?

She sang three....lol

I thought the awards in the audience were cool at first, because I figured it would shorten the length of the show, but it still ran 14 minutes over.

Whoever put on the show last night though wont win any Emmy's....so many mistakes, people running out on stage to give Rock something, etc...

I thought the stage line-ups and the aisle action was stupid and demeaning to those people and their categories.

I thought Chris Rock was sad, and apparently Hollywood has no REAL interest in preserving or returning to any type of class. Showing clips of Carson, how it is SUPPOSED to be done, made Rock look even worse by comparison.

Beyonce doing three songs, which she didn't originally sing? Why? What would be wrong with Emmy Rossum singing the song she sang in Phantom? I just didn't get it.

Kate Blanchett, man what a beauty and a class act. I'm glad I wasn't awake to watch Hillary's speech. Was I thanked too? I would have thought this year Scorsese could have won for directing the next Land Before Time movie but I guess he's cursed. I like Clint and think he's a real throwback to how Hollywood used to be.

I'm glad Incredibles dominated and left Shrek out in the cold.

Yes, it went 14 minutes over 3 hours, but it was still the shortest ceremony in years. So it did help.

Did she? My bad. Haven't had the opportunity to see it yet.

So, why couldn't SHE sing it then?

Sean Penn is a total arse who needs to exit puberty and grow a sense of humor.... Man! Talk about a guy taking himself too seriously and buying his own press.... DORK!!! DOOFUS!!! DINGBAT!!!

I generally agree with Chaplin's take on the award ceremony itself.

As to the awards, they truly could have gone a number of different directions and been "right." I saw most of the major movies this year and they were all very, very good.

How can you not love Cate? What a classy, classy woman..... and she CAN act.

I felt badly for Johnny Depp..... He picked a bad year for Finding Neverland..... I don't think GOD could have beat Jaime this year ;)

Here are a couple of thoughts I had for shortening the show.

1) Why not cut the musical numbers?

2) Why not cut out the animation items? Why are actual movies in categories with cartoons/Pixars? Give the animation their own award show on the Disney Channel or Nickelodeon.

BTW, what happened to actual "cartoons?" Pixar just isn't the same to me.

Do those and you might cut out 1-2 hours.

1) I'm sorta for that, but if you have a song nominated, it kinda makes sense for the songs to be performed.

2) I don't think there's enough categories to have it's own show. As for the 2d versus 3d arguement, 2d doesn't make any money, but 3d does. Go figure.
