'I'd way rather this than the Oscars': Timothee Chalamet makes bold promotion in wake of Knicks' NBA title originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
There may have been some "bandwagon" celebrity fans over the New York Knicks' dominant 2026 playoff run. But Timothee Chalamet was not one of them.
For years, Chalamet has established himself as a die-hard Knicks fan, from dug-up old tweets of him supporting the squad, to his often courtside appearances. In fact, over the last few months at Madison Square Garden, it'd be hard to find a game Chalamet wasn't just in attendance for, but also cheering as loud as he could.
So when he finally watched in-person as the Knicks secured a championship on Saturday night, beating the Spurs in Game 5, Chalamet had a bold statement, virtually saying he'd prefer the Larry O'Brien trophy residing in New York City over his own career success.
Here's what Chalamet had to say in reaction to the Knicks' title.

Chalamet has already made his priorities clear — while he previously said at the 2025 SAG Awards that he's in "pursuit of greatness" as an actor, the star has also taken some criticism for comments about opera and ballet when "like no one cares about this anymore."
On Saturday, when his life-long favorite team won a championship for the first time in 53 years, Chalamet took his viewpoints on his own career a step further. In a clip posted to social media from San Antonio, the actor said he'd "way rather have this than the Oscars."
"Knicks are champions, baby!" Chalamet added.

Has Timothee Chalamet ever won an Oscar?
Perhaps part of the reason Chalamet values the Knicks' success over the Oscars, as he claimed, is that he has yet to win an Academy Award.
Chalamet has been nominated four times, but has not yet won an Oscar.

In 2026, Chalamet appeared to have his best shot yet at an Academy Award. For his role as both an actor and producer in "Marty Supreme," Chalamet was nominated in the "Best Actor" and "Best Picture" categories.
However, "Best Picture" went to "One Battle After Another," while "Best Actor" went to Michael B. Jordan for his role in "Sinners."

How long has Timothee Chalamet been a Knicks fan?
Chalamet is a well-documented Knicks fan into his childhood. A Landry Fields tweet from 2010 showed that a young Chalamet once won a contest for Knicks tickets:
