The Miami Dolphins added a new passer to their quarterback room Saturday when they took Quinn Ewers in Round 7 of the 2025 NFL draft.

For three years, the team attempted to turn seventh-round pick Skylar Thompson into a viable backup for Tua Tagovailoa. But when he struggled to get the Dolphins offense in gear earlier this year, the team turned to Tyler Huntley as its No. 2 for the rest of the year and signed Zach Wilson earlier this offseason.

Now the Dolphins are hoping they can turn Ewers into their new developmental project. So who is the former Texas and Ohio State quarterback? Here are six things to know about Ewers:

Ewers was the No. 1 recruit in the nation out of high school

Not long ago, Ewers was the most sought-after blue chip recruit in football. After initially committing to Texas before his senior season of high school ball, Ewers later decommitted and became an Ohio State commit instead. But he played a grand total of two snaps with the Buckeyes before transferring to join the Longhorns after the 2021 season when it was clear C.J. Stroud would hold the starting job in Columbus in 2022.

In three seasons with the Longhorns, Ewers put up prolific numbers with 9,128 total passing yards, 68 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions.

Many expected Ewers to be a first-round pick before the 2024 season

The quarterback draft class in 2025 ended up looking much different than initial expectations. Ewers and Georgia's Carson Beck were largely expected to be among the top options and likely first-round pick, while few expected eventual No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward to be in the mix.

"Ewers is a fun study with his smooth delivery and capacity to change arm angles to make creative throws," ESPN's Field Yates wrote in an August 2024 mock that had Ewers going No. 8 overall. "He has to be more consistent throwing downfield, but he can really carve up a defense with his intermediate accuracy. Ewers' functional mobility is also very good and allows him to work around the pocket effectively."

So what changed? While the Longhorns went 11-3 and reached the College Football Playoff semifinals, Ewers dealt with injuries and showed shaky decision making.

Ewers reportedly had a $6 million offer to stay in the college ranks

It was clear that the Ewers era was over in Texas with Arch Manning set to take the reins for the Longhorns in 2026. But there was no shortage in Ewers staying in the collegiate ranks.

According to On3Sports, there was a $6 million offer on the table for Ewers to forgo the NFL draft and hit the transfer portal. As a seventh-round pick, he's due to make a little more than $4.3 million on a four-year deal with the Dolphins.

The Dolphins hope 'overlap' of offensive systems will help Ewers learn fast

The Dolphins' and Longhorns' offenses aren't just similar -- they were exactly the same, at times.

"We run a lot of stuff that Miami does," Ewers said Saturday. "We get stuff that Miami does and we installed it at Texas when I was playing at Texas. I’m excited to go into this facility, this franchise and learn kind of how they do it because I know we see it on film and we’re like, OK, it looks like this is the first read, but I want to go see to the furthest extent how they teach that sort of stuff if that makes sense.”

"I think one of the things that gives him an advantage as a rookie just getting started is that overlap," said Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel. "I think the way that he orchestrates the offense from the motion timing and really anticipating things, there’s a fit there, so we’re excited to get him in the program and start working.”

Ewers rocked quite a mullet early in his collegiate career

Early in his collegiate career, Ewers was pretty well known for his trademark hair.

But after the 2022 season, he decided it was time to clean up his look.

"I knew something had to change," Ewers told Robert Griffin III on a podcast. "So I started with the hair and decided to chop it off. And then drop weight and kind of get in better shape." Get more so I could take hits better and what not, just get more comfortable."

Dez Bryant thinks he'll be starting for the Dolphins in no time

It seems the Dolphins' plan is for Ewers to start his career at No. 3 on the depth chart and work his way into a much cheaper alternative than a veteran backup behind Tagovailoa. Retired three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Dez Bryant thinks Miami stumbled into a lot more than that.

I like Quinn Ewers over Tua already. He's Dan Marino 2.0 and yes..I said it.

I'll never forget when I spoke my thoughts about Patrick Mahomes when he got drafted; folks thought I was crazy, but we all know how that situation is playing out at the moment. Sometimes it's all about where you land. Ewers couldn't have been put in a better situation for his… https://t.co/6WnC2OKVUo

I don’t think so..he’s going to operate the offense to perfection..Ain’t no way we see Quinn Ewers under throw Tyrek Hill.. https://t.co/vkLS46Lc3K

Go search my name with Tua's name and you'll see how much I've always defended him. I'm talking football and only football, nothing personal on this end. https://t.co/yaIR9EJ36x
