We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Friday, July 17, is 58 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With 58 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 1958 season for the Cardinals.
1958 was not a good season for the Cardinals. They started the season 2-2, then had a tie and then lost their final seven games. They allowed 30 or more points seven times. They were second-to-last in scoring defense, giving up 29.7 points per game.
They were fifth in scoring offense, putting up 21.8 per game.
Four Cardinals players were Pro Bowlers.
Lane was also a second-team All-Pro.
The starting quarterback job was split. M.C. Reynolds started seven games, passing for 1,422 yards, 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Lamar McHan started five. He passed for 1,291 yards, 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Both had one win.
Matson had 970 yards from scrimmage, rushing for 550 and five touchdowns and catching 33 passes for 465 yards and three scores. He also had two kick return touchdowns, averaging 35.5 yards on 14 returns.
Woodley Lewis led the team with 46 catches for 690 yards and four touchdowns. Nagler had 36 catches for 469 yards and five scores.
Defensive back Dick Nolan had a team-leading five interceptions on defense.
