We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Wednesday, July 22, is 53 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With 53 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 1953 season for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals were awful in 1953. They went 1-10-1, winning only the final game of the season.
They were 10th in the league (12 teams) in scoring, averaging 15.8 points per game, and they were 10th in scoring defense, giving up 28.1 per game.
They had the worst record in the league.
The Cardinals still had four Pro Bowlers.
Olszewski was a rookie.
Jim Root started six of the team's 12 games at quarterback, going 0-5-1. He oassed for 1,149 yards, eight touchdowns and 11 interceptions. In four starts, Steve Romanik had four touchdown passes and nine picks, while Ray Nagel had no touchdown passes and five picks in two starts.
Trippi led in rushing with 433 yards. He threw two touchdown passes and had two receiving touchdowns. He led the NFL, averaging 11.4 yards per punt return, too.
Olszewski rushed for 386 yards and four scores, and he caught a team-leading 21 passes for 210 yards and one score. Receiver Billy Cross had 17 receptions for a team-leading 285 yards.
Cornerback Ray Ramsey had 10 interceptions on defense.
