Blue Jackets head coach Rick Bowness is adding a Columbus native to his staff.

The team announced the hiring of Trent Vogelhuber as an assistant coach. Vogelhuber, 37, has been the head coach of the AHL affiliate Cleveland Monsters for the past four seasons. He had a 145-108-35 record.

Vogelhuber grew up in Dublin, Ohio.

Did Columbus Blue Jackets assistant Trent Vogelhuber play in the NHL?​


Vogelhuber was drafted by the Blue Jackets with the No. 211 pick in the 2007 NHL Draft. Chronic knee injuries plagued his career, forcing him to retire from playing at 29. He was the first central Ohio player to be drafted and first to be selected by the Blue Jackets.

While he played in preseason games for the Blue Jackets, he never appeared in an NHL regular-season game.

Vogelhuber played collegiately at Miami (OH) for four seasons before turning pro.

How long did Trent Vogelhuber play professional hockey?​


Vogelhuber first appeared in two games with the AHL Springfield Falcons in the 2011-12 season. He spent five seasons with Columbus' AHL affiliate, winning a Calder trophy with the Lake Erie Monsters in the 2015-16 season. He played for the Colorado Avalanche's AHL affiliate in San Antonio for two seasons following his time in Columbus' system.
