Preseason games aren't about wins and losses, but rather they are more so about individual performances, with playing time, roles, and roster spots up for grabs.
So in the Indianapolis Colts' preseason opener against New England, who were the standout performers that gave their training camp stock a big boost?
Let's take a look.
Richardson was both efficient, completing 11-of-14 passes, and he generated chunk plays, with four pass catchers having at least one reception of 16 yards. Richardson would rush for 53 yards and a touchdown as well.
The offense under Richardson also orchestrated nearly two scoring drives in the final minutes of the first half.
Richardson's performance wasn't perfect -- he did fumble, and even though Coleman Owen should have caught the pass that went through his hands, the throw was a bit off target.
That said, Richardson had perhaps his best performance of the summer and has positioned himself well in the battle for the backup quarterback role.
Seeing action late in the game, Castle made the most of his opportunities, rushing for 47 yards on nine attempts, which included a long run of 18 yards. Castle averaged 5.2 yards per rush, the most of any running back on the team.
Mallory has put together some good practices as of late and continued that performance in this game, where he caught six of his seven targets for 80 yards. His longest reception went for 19 yards, and he outgained the Colts' second-most productive pass-catcher by 51 yards.
Curry did a bit of everything for the Colts' defensive front. He totaled six tackles as a run defender, including three solo, and two for a loss. He also generated a sack and three quarterback hits, along with two pass deflections.
For a Colts' defense that could use more pass rush juice, Curry needs more opportunities to see if he could potentially make a greater impact this season.
Shrader entered this game likely at a disadvantage to Blake Grupe in the kicking competition. However, after Grupe went 0-for-1 in the first half, Shrader would go 2-for-2, which included making a 61-yarder late to tie the game.
This competition is still very much ongoing.
