The Carolina Panthers released veteran outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney on Thursday, sending a proven veteran pass-rusher into free agency.
While Clowney never quite lived up to his first-overall NFL Draft status, he has established himself as a very reliable mercenary for teams needing more help off the edge. He has played for teams like the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans and Seattle Seahawks in recent years.
In 14 games last season, Clowney posted 46 tackles and 5.5 sacks with the Panthers. At 32, he could fill in as a short-term starter for an edge-needy team or come off the bench as an excellent depth at pass-rusher.
Let's go through five possible NFL landing spots for Clowney, all of whom have playoff aspirations this fall.
With Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson's future with the team in doubt, Clowney could be a smart insurance policy. As the team prepares 2025 first rounder Shemar Stewart for a bigger role in the future, Clowney could step in as a temporary starter or as excellent depth along the defensive line as Cincinnati tries to reset itself as an AFC powerhouse. If Hendrickson stays, adding Clowney would make this line much deeper.
The Rams have two young pass-rushers in Jared Verse and Byron Young they can lean on, but deploying Clowney off the bench would help Los Angeles bolster its championship hopes. As veteran depth, it's hard to find somebody like Clowney in May. The Rams could be pretty formidable off the edge with Clowney in town.
The Lions seem like a perfect fit for Clowney, as he could possibly start next to Aidan Hutchinson along the defensive line. Even if he's just a rotational pass-rusher in Detroit, he could help the Lions maintain their fierce edge once Hutchinson gets healthy from his injuries. We like this idea a lot for Detroit, especially in May.
The Commanders could always use more help along the defensive line, and Clowney could help an upstart Washington team maintain its grip as an NFC contender. Deploying Clowney off the edge in a rotational role in D.C. seems like a savvy move, and he wouldn't even have to go far from Carolina to move there.
The Bears have retooled their defensive line this offseason, and adding Clowney into the mix as a designated pass-rusher could help Chicago further establish its defense as the Monsters of the Midway. We'd love to see how Dennis Allen would scheme him up on the Bears defensive line.
