The Washington Commanders got tough news about starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil on Saturday.
He will reportedly miss "at least a significant portion of the regular season" with a torn triceps suffered in Saturday's practice that will likely require surgery, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Steve Wyche.
Tunsil missing a good portion of the regular season for the Commanders definitely puts the organization on watch to get his replacement settled as soon as possible. Keeping the left side of the line clean for quarterback Jayden Daniels is particularly important for Washington, especially considering Daniels' recent injury history.
Who could replace Tunsil in the lineup until he's ready to return? Do the Commanders have anybody in-house who could do the job? Could they look outside the organization? Let's look at their best options.
The most natural fit is moving Conerly back to his natural position of left tackle until Tunsil is healthy. Conerly played left tackle in college at Oregon and could grow his versatility in the NFL by playing at his old spot with the Commanders. This is the best bet for a solution, especially with Andrew Wylie on the roster to play right tackle.
Wylie could slot in at left tackle, even if right tackle is a more natural fit for him given his history in the NFL. Conerly is a more natural fit to slide over to the left side and allow Wylie to play on the right. However, we'll include him.
The former Detroit Lions left tackle is still a free agent and is by far the best option available in free agency. If the Commanders want to keep Conerly on the right side and don't feel comfortable with Wylie on the left side, they could sign Decker and have him fill in until Tunsil gets back.
The former Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars left tackle is also available in free agency; he provides ample experience on the left side of the line, even if he doesn't quite have the marquee appeal of signing Decker.
Beachum has lot of experience playing left tackle in the NFL, even if he primarily played on the right side of the line with the Arizona Cardinals. While he may be more of a swing tackle at this stage of his career, he might be a good spot starter if Tunsil doesn't miss as much time as expected. He might be a good person to bring in for depth if the Commanders go with one of their in-house options. Having a good vet like Beachum is always good business.
