The Tampa Bay Buccaneers enter training camp with several familiar defensive pieces, but the summer will also be about identifying which players can force their way into larger roles.
Todd Bowles’ defense has always depended on toughness, communication and versatility. Tampa Bay needs front-seven disruption, reliable secondary play and enough young depth to keep the unit fresh over a 17-game season. That makes training camp especially important for players trying to move from interesting names to trusted contributors.
Here are five Buccaneers defenders to watch during 2026 training camp.
Bain may be the most exciting young defender on the roster. The Buccaneers invested in the former Miami standout because of his power, motor, and ability to affect games from the defensive front. Now comes the next step: proving he can handle NFL blocking schemes and contribute immediately.
Tampa Bay does not need Bain to become a finished product in his first camp, but it does need flashes that translate. If he can win with power, set the edge, and provide interior-outside versatility depending on the package, he could quickly become one of the most important young players on Bowles’ defense.
McCollum enters camp as one of the more important defensive backs on the roster. His size, athleticism, and experience give Tampa Bay a player capable of handling meaningful snaps at cornerback, but the next step is consistency.
The Buccaneers need McCollum to be steady in coverage, reliable with his eyes, and physical enough to hold up when teams test him. If he continues developing, Tampa Bay’s secondary becomes much easier to trust. If not, cornerback depth could remain one of the defense’s biggest questions.
Smith’s value comes from versatility. He can align in different spots, help in coverage, and bring physicality near the line of scrimmage. That kind of defensive back is valuable in Bowles’ system, where disguise and pressure looks often require safeties and nickel defenders to handle multiple responsibilities.
