The Big West Conference honored five BeachBows when it announced its all-conference awards for beach volleyball on Tuesday.
Kiera Cornman is the Big West Freshman of the Year and on the All-Big West second team and the all-freshman team.
Julia Lawrenz and Izadora Stedile were named to the All-Big West first team after going 23-8 overall and 21-7 in the No. 1 flight, while Emily Heintzelman and Sydney Miller earned honorable mention.
Cornman and Heintzelman were partnered most of the season, with Heintzelman, a graduate transfer from Tulane, going 20-8 overall and Cornman 19-11.
Miller played with four different partners and won 20 of her 33 matches.
The team finished 19-14 under first-year head coach Danny Alvarez.
Jung, Robertson advance in Open qualifying
Honolulu’s Peter Jung and Brian Robertson of New Jersey were the low scorers Tuesday at Pearl at Kalauao to advance to final qualifying for the 126th U.S. Open.
Jung shot an even-par 71 and Robertson a 72.
Forty players vied for the two spots. Final qualifying events will be held at 10 sites across the U.S. mainland plus Japan, Canada and England on May 18 ad 25 and June 8. The U.S. Open will take place June 15-21 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York.
Rainbow Wahine sailors get at-large bid
The University of Hawai’i women’s sailing team will return to the ICSA Women’s Fleet Race National Championship on May 15-18 in St. Petersburg, Fla., after the Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s National Championship Selection Committee granted the Rainbow Wahine an at-large bid on Tuesday.
UH will be the 27th-ranked school at the championship, after a third-place finish at the PCCSC Fleet Race Championship earlier this month. The field will include 36 teams.
This is the Rainbow Wahine’s fifth consecutive year competing at the national championship tournament, but they have not reached the finals round since 2012.
