The San Francisco 49ers made their first injury-related roster move of the offseason Friday when they waived defensive end Drake Jackson with a failed physical designation. The Athletic's Matt Barrows reported the move.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Jackson is still working through rehab on a knee injury and is expected to be cleared in time for training camp.

Jackson was the 49ers' first pick in the 2022 draft at No. 61 overall. They didn't pick in the first round because they dealt their 2022 first-round choice in the trade up to No. 3 overall in the 2021 draft.

The former USC star put together a fine rookie year with 3.0 sacks, one interceptions and eight pass breakups in 15 games. There was optimism he'd develop in his second season when he got a chance to stick at one position -- an opportunity he didn't get in college. Jackson started his second season by racking up 3.0 sacks in the 49ers' season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Those would be his final three sacks in a 49ers uniform. He had none over the next seven games before suffering a patellar tendon injury in Week 8 that has hampered him since. Jackson was on track to return for training camp last year, but he never suited up. He continued to struggle with his rehab and the 49ers wound up waiving him.

By letting Jackson go the 49ers are now without their first three picks in the 2022 draft. Running back Tyrion Davis-Price and Danny Gray were let go last year.
