49ers urged to shake up roster with potential quarterback deal originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The San Francisco 49ers are being urged to make a shocking trade involving Pro Bowl quarterback and backup Mac Jones ahead of the 2026 season.
Reports suggest that the 49ers have no immediate plans to trade Jones, but Bleacher Report's Moe Moton thinks San Francisco should consider it.
" However, Jones' trade value isn't going to peak beyond what it is right now unless he sees the field for a significant number of snaps this year.
"Moreover, Jones will be a free agent in 2027. The 49ers could offer him a lucrative deal to stay, but he may want to find a starting job elsewhere.
"San Francisco committed to Purdy with a five-year, $265 million extension last offseason.
"If a team offers the 49ers a second-round pick for their backup signal-caller who's in the final year of his contract, they should consider the deal."
The expectation is that the 49ers will hold on to Jones for the 2026 season and for good reason. Brock Purdy has dealt with his fair share of injuries in his career, and having a quarterback like Jones as the backup is essential.
He proved that last season when he played in 11 games for the team, starting in eight of them and put up stellar numbers. The former first-round pick posted a 97.4 passer rating, threw for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 69.6 percent of his passes.
49ers have no interest in trading Mac Jones
Not only are the 49ers not entertaining that notion, but even so, San Francisco has placed an insane asking price on him and adjusted his contract to ensure that he stays put.
Earlier this offseason, 49ers general manager John Lynch said they value Jones.
"He's really good for us and we value that," Lynch said. "And so somebody would have to come with something fairly strong for us to consider (trading him). And then I don't know what we do. Obviously there's always something that would make you (do it), but I think we're a better team with him on it and we just like having him around."
Unless there's an offer the 49ers receive for Jones that is too good to reject, he will enter his second season with the club.
