Backup quarterback Mac Jones is coming back for another season. It's not a secret and it should not come as a surprise to San Francisco 49ers faithful.
Jones proved valuable enough for the Niners to shut down trade offers and bring him back for the 2026 season. He did so with a strong campaign in relief of an injured Brock Purdy last year. Now, the veteran quarterback is locked in for another season with San Francisco.
Nick San Miguel of Niners Noise discussed the chances that Jones may not only return for just one season with the team. San Miguel began by sharing what others are contending about the quarterback's future.
"A lot of the chatter early on this offseason was around whether the San Francisco 49ers were going to trade backup quarterback Mac Jones. It seems a lot of that chatter was overblown, and now some are even speculating that Jones could stay with the Niners beyond this year.
49ers insider Matt Maiocco speculated on a recent episode of the 49ers Talk podcast that there is a possibility Jones could return to the Niners even after he hits free agency following this season."
It's unlikely that the Niners would underpay Jones. Backup quarterbacks can carry a team in the absence of a starter, as Jones did last season for the team. Returning for a long-term deal could be a win-win for both Jones and San Francisco.

San Miguel continued with why the return could make sense.
"Typically, teams looking for a quarterback are struggling squads trying to rebuild. Maybe Jones could serve as a sort of placeholder starter for a team as it searches for a long-term guy, but Maiocco may be right that most teams will still view him as a backup.
If that’s the case, then why not stay with San Francisco? He’d be in a place where he is clearly comfortable and got back to loving the game of football. Jones is able to be himself with the Niners in a way he was never allowed to be in other places… cough, cough, New England."
That Jones' starting days are over at quarterback is an opinion yet to be proven. Jones threw for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions in just eight games of extended snaps, just under half a season. Pacing for over a 4,200-yard passing season is starter caliber production.
Despite his strong play, there's a real chance Jones is the Niners' backup quarterback for the foreseeable future. He will look to be prepared for another impressive season in 2026.
