The San Francisco 49ers are set to add depth on their offensive line. NFL Media's Tom Pelissero was first to report the 49ers and veteran offensive lineman Robert Jones agreed to a contract. The report was confirmed by NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.
While this isn't the splashiest offseason signing for San Francisco, it does give them some much-needed depth on the interior of their offensive line. Maiocco reported Jones is a "strong candidate to start" at the open left guard position for the 49ers.
Jones, 27, played in 49 games with 30 starts across his first four seasons with the Miami Dolphins. The undrafted rookie from Middle Tennessee State primarily played left guard under then-head coach Mike McDaniel, and was a 17-game starter in 2024. His familiarity with McDaniel's scheme should help him hit the ground running in 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan's system.
The Dallas Cowboys signed Jones in free agency a season ago, but he injured his neck in training camp and missed the entire 2025 season.
This addition makes sense for the 49ers and continues their overhaul on the interior of their offensive line. They let Spencer Burford leave in free agency and they've yet to re-sign offensive lineman Ben Bartch who was the Week 1 starter at LG a season ago. Burford eventually took over that starting job after Bartch went down with an injury and rookie seventh-round pick Connor Colby struggled.
With neither Bartch nor Burford in the mix, Jones becomes the most experienced LG option for San Francisco. They also added Brett Toth in free agency. He has six starts in 37 games in six seasons as a pro.
The 49ers badly needed to shore up some their depth issues inside and they've done that with a couple of free agent signings. It doesn't take interior OL off the board for them in the draft, but the need became less urgent when Jones agreed to a contract.
